Overview
Manufactured and distributed by Horizon Therapeutics, PLC, Tepezza is the first and only FDA approved drug for treating (Teprotumumab) for Thyroid Eye Disease (TED)/ Graves’ Disease and has been linked to long-term side effects that have been understated and caused significant hearing loss in people who rely on it. After being granted Fast Track, Breakthrough Therapy, and Priority Review Designation to expedite the process, Tepezza was approved by the FDA on January 20, 2020. Clinical trials prior to FDA approval showed that hearing impairments had been reported in 10% of patients; however, a newer study reported by the Endocrine Society found that the rates of hearing impairment could be as high as 65%. Since its approval, numerous reports of adverse effects have been made by Horizon to the FDA with the first Tepezza lawsuit being filed in August 2022 and more surfacing since. The multitude and similarities among such cases has led to the consolidation of the ongoing Tepezza lawsuits into a multidistrict litigation (MDL).
