If you suffer from a medical condition or disease, you may take one or more medications. You trust that they are going to help you – not hurt you. Unfortunately, many prescription and over-the-counter medications cause serious side effects, such as eye conditions.

If you developed an eye disease or eye condition and you think it was because of a medication you've taken, contact Edgar Snyder & Associates right away. You may have a dangerous drug case, and we can help.

Drugs That Can Cause Eye Diseases and Eye Conditions

There are many prescription and over-the-counter medications that may cause side effects such as blurred vision, double vision, and eyesight problems. Some of these medications can cause serious eye disorders, and even result in loss of eyesight.

Here are a few types of drugs that can lead to eye diseases and eye conditions:

  • Antiarrhythmia Drugs – used to treat abnormal heart rhythms; may cause eyesight problems such as blurred vision, yellow vision, or blue-green halos around objects (Cordarone, Lanoxin)
  • Antimalarial Drugs – used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and malaria; may cause blurred vision and irreversible retinopathy if used long-term (Aralen and Plaquenil)
  • Corticosteroids – used for conditions such as arthritis or asthma; may cause glaucoma or cataracts
  • Erectile Dysfunction Drugs – may cause blurred vision and sensitivity to light (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, etc.)
  • Phenothiazines – used to treat schizophrenia and other mental health conditions; may cause blurred vision, changes in color vision, and difficulty with night vision (chlorpromazine and thioridazine)
  • Tamoxifen – used to reduce the risk of breast cancer relapse; may lead to blurred vision, changes to the retina and cornea, and cataracts
  • Flomax – used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate); can cause intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS), which makes the iris constrict suddenly during surgery, leading to potentially serious complications during an operation

Glaucoma and Dangerous Drugs

Several prescription drugs are known to cause glaucoma, which can lead to blindness. Drugs known to cause glaucoma include corticosteroids (cortisone or prednisone), certain anticancer drugs, sulfa drugs, and topiramate (Topamax).

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Dangerous Drugs

Many drugs have been linked to Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which can cause large blisters that seriously damage the cornea.
