2017 Pennsylvania Work Zone Accident Statistics

  • 43 percent of work zone crashes resulted in fatality or injury
  • There was a total of 1,778 work zone crashes, with 19 fatalities and 1,106 injuries
  • 3 of the 19 fatalities were work zone employees
  • 1,345 crashes occured on a state highway, 312, on the turnpike, and 151 on a local road
  • Most work zone accidents were commited by passenger cars (49 percent) and SUVs (42 percent)

2014 Pennsylvania Work Zone Accident Statistics

  • 47 percent of work zone crashes in 2014 contained fatalities or injuries.
  • There were a total of 1,845 work zone crashes, with 24 fatalities and 1,241 injuries.
  • Of the 24 work zone related fatalities, 3 of them were road workers.
  • The majority of crashes, 952 of them, occurred on state highways. About 244 took place on the turnpike.
  • Most work zone crashes involved either a passenger car (53%) or an SUV (37.5%).

2013 Pennsylvania Work Zone Accident Statistics

  • 48 percent of work zone crashes in 2013 contained fatalities or injuries.
  • There were a total of 1,845 work zone crashes, with 16 fatalities and 1,262 injuries.
  • Of the 16 work zone related fatalities, 4 of them were road workers.
  • The majority of crashes, 958 of them, occurred on state highways. About 269 took place on the turnpike.
  • Most work zone crashes involved either a passenger car (52%) or an SUV (32%).

2012 Pennsylvania Work Zone Accident Statistics

  • There were 1,661 accidents in work-zones in Pennsylvania in 2012 -- 21 were killed (including 3 workers) and 1,124 were injured.
  • About half of work zone crashes (49.5%) were property-damage-only crashes.
  • The majority of work zone crashes occurred on state highways. About 13.7% took place on the turnpike.

Pennsylvania Work Zone Accident Statistics (2011)

  • 48 percent of work zone crashes in 2011 contained injuries or fatalities.
  • 1,812 work zone crashes occurred in 2011, which led to 1,315 injuries and 21 deaths.
  • The majority (82.4%) of work zone crashes in 2011 occurred on state highways.
  • Most work zone crashes involved either a passenger car (45.5%) or an SUV (35.8%).
  • One construction worker was killed in 2011 during a work zone crash.

National Work Zone Car Crash Statistics

  • Car accidents involving dangerous pavement-edge drop-offs kill approximately 160 people and injure 11,000 every year.
  • Crashes in highway work zones have killed at least 4,700 Americans – more than two a day – and injured 200,000 in the last five years alone.
  • About 85% of people killed in work zones are motorists, not workers.
  • In 2009, there were 667 work zone fatalities.
  • There are more than 40,000 injuries in work zones each year.
  • Approximately one work zone fatality occurs every 10 hours (2.3 a day).
  • Approximately one work zone injury occurs every 13 minutes (110 a day).
  • There were 162 large trucks and buses that were involved in work zone crashes in 2009.

Pennsylvania Work Zone Accident Statistics (2008-2010)

  • In 2010, there were 1,886 traffic collisions in Pennsylvania work zones.
  • In 2010, 23 people died in car accidents that occurred in Pennsylvania construction zones. Four of those were workers.
  • In 2010, 1,425 people were injured in traffic crashes in Pennsylvania work zones.
  • In 2009, there were 23 work zone fatalities in Pennsylvania.
  • In 2009, there were 9 large trucks and buses involved in construction zones.
  • In 2008, about 1,415 work zone crashes occurred across Pennsylvania.
  • Pennsylvania documented 23 traffic crash fatalities in construction zones in 2009, according to data collected through the Fatality Analysis Reporting System of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • 102 PennDOT employees have been killed in work zones since 1967.
  • In Ohio, work zone monitoring found that the presence of construction caused accident rates to jump as much as 70%.
