Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Protect Yourself Against Uninsured and Underinsured Drivers

According to the Insurance Research Council, nearly one in every seven drivers is uninsured and many more are considered underinsured. While Pennsylvania law states that you must have car insurance, the minimum requirements are barely enough to cover a trip in an ambulance – let alone a trip to the emergency room.

This is when Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage becomes so beneficial. It's an optional form of coverage added to your insurance policy. For a few extra dollars on your premium, you can save yourself thousands of dollars from uninsured and underinsured drivers on the road.

Why UM/UIM Coverage is Important

UM/UIM coverage applies to you, as well as family members living in the same household, in the event of a car accident. It doesn't matter whether you're a driver, passenger, pedestrian, or the victim of a hit-and-run – UM/UIM coverage will help pay for the costs related to accidents with uninsured or underinsured drivers.

Our law firm's recommended coverage:

  • $100,000 per person
  • $300,000 per occurrence

With our recommended coverage limits, you'll be able to protect yourself and your loved ones. If you've ever been injured, you know how quickly medical bills can pile up. UM/UIM can help pay for medical bills, pain and suffering, property damage, and much more.

Remember, you can change your car insurance policy at any time – just call your insurance agent today – before the unexpected happens.

How Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage Works

Example: If an uninsured driver hits you, what happens?

  • By choosing to carry UM/UIM coverage at our recommended levels, your own insurance will pay you for all recoverable damages up to $100,000 per person and $300,000 per occurrence (or more if you decide to stack your coverage).
  • If you didn't choose to add UM/UIM, you would have to sue the at-fault driver to recover your damages. In most cases with uninsured drivers, they don't have assets for you to recover money. This could leave you holding the bill.
